What Is Accoya Timber?

Authentic Timber

Accoya Timber is a specially treated softwood that undergoes a process called acetylation. This enhances the timber at a molecular level, improving its resistance to moisture, decay and movement. The result is a stable, long lasting timber suited to external joinery, one that retains the appearance and workability of natural wood while offering the performance modern buildings need.

This stability matters most in sash and casement windows, where smooth operation depends on precise tolerances. Building our Accoya sash windows and Accoya wood windows from this timber keeps that tolerance intact for years, not just at installation.

Accoya Compared to Other Window Timbers

Choosing the best timber for windows depends on the property and the priority, appearance, cost or long-term performance. Alongside Accoya, we also work with Sapele and Oak, and each suits a different brief:

  • Accoya offers the strongest dimensional stability of the three, with outstanding resistance to rot and a 50-year external warranty, making it the choice for low-maintenance, high-performance windows
  • Sapele is a stable hardwood with an attractive grain, well suited to traditional and heritage properties where appearance is the priority
  • Oak brings classic character and natural strength, favoured for period homes where a heavier, more traditional grain is wanted

For most exposed, high-performance applications, Accoya is the one we recommend first, but the right answer depends on the building.

Manufactured In House at Our Salisbury Workshop

Every Accoya wood window and door we produce is made in-house, from initial survey and design through to manufacture and installation, without work passed to a subcontractor. Keeping production under one roof means we control every element of the Accoya joinery ourselves, joint, moulding and finish, rather than relying on someone else’s standards.

Because Accoya is so workable, we can build shaped frames, arched heads and detailed architectural features, which matters when matching existing timber windows or producing joinery for an unusual opening. Clients choose from a full range of paint colours and finishes, and the smooth surface of Accoya Timber keeps that finish consistent across the whole façade.
