At Tailored Wood, our restoration process is a meticulous and comprehensive endeavour, aimed at reviving the timeless beauty and functionality of windows. When we undertake a restoration project, the following key steps are included in our process:

Disassembly and Stripping: We initiate the restoration by carefully disassembling the window, removing any sashes, and thoroughly stripping it down. This step is crucial to expose the underlying condition of the frame and identify areas that require attention.

Rot Treatment and Repairs: Upon disassembly, we meticulously inspect the frame for signs of rot. Any identified areas are treated promptly, with options including scarf repairs for structural integrity or the application of a two-part filler for smaller, non-structural repairs. This ensures a solid foundation for the restoration.

Surface Preparation: The frame is scraped back to remove old paint and imperfections. We then sand the frame to key and prepare it for paint.

Painting and Finishing: The frame is then coated with a high-build undercoat, providing a durable foundation, before applying the two top-coats. We use a three-part, microporous, Sikkens paint system, an industry standard in external joinery.

New Hardwood Sashes: As part of the restoration, we craft and install new hardwood sashes tailored to match the original design. These sashes are meticulously crafted to seamlessly integrate with the existing structure while meeting modern standards for durability and energy efficiency by incorporating routed in draft proofing and double-glazing.

Glazing Options: We offer flexibility in glazing options to suit your preferences and requirements. Whether you elect to use double-glazed or single-glazed units, our installations are designed to enhance energy efficiency, acoustic performance, and overall comfort.

Cord and Weight System: To restore the functionality of the window, we install the replacement sashes on new cords and weights.

At Tailored Wood, our restoration process is a testament to our dedication to preserving the heritage and character of windows while integrating modern materials and techniques for enhanced performance and longevity.

At Tailored Wood, a refurbishment consists of a meticulous process aimed at rejuvenating the aesthetics and enhancing the functionality of your existing windows.

Comprehensive Assessment: We initiate a thorough examination of the window, assessing the condition of both the frame and the existing sashes. This assessment guides our refurbishment strategy and allows to ascertain whether it is a suitable candidate for refurbishment.

Disassembly and Stripping: We initiate the restoration by carefully disassembling the window, removing any sashes, and thoroughly stripping it down. This step is crucial to expose the underlying condition of the frame and identify areas that require attention.

Rot Treatment and Repairs: Once the window is stripped-down, we meticulously inspect the frame for signs of rot. Any identified areas are treated either using scarf repairs or the application of a two-part filler, depending on the extent of any rot or damage. This process is mirrored across the existing sashes.

Surface Preparation: The frame and sashes undergo a full scrape-back to remove loose paint and imperfections, before sanding and keying the frame in ready for painting.

Painting and Finishing: The frame and sashes are then coated with a high-build undercoat, providing a durable foundation, before applying the two top-coats. We use a three-part, microporous, Sikkens paint system, an industry standard in external joinery.

Optional Draft Proofing: To enhance energy efficiency and comfort, we offer optional draft-proofing solutions. This can include routing in draft-proofing features to the existing sashes, ensuring a more thermally efficient and airtight window.

At Tailored Wood, our refurbishment process showcases our commitment to preserving the unique character of windows while optimising their performance through careful attention to detail and the incorporation of modern enhancements.

At Tailored Wood, we take pride in the quality and craftsmanship of our bespoke heritage windows and doors. To ensure durability, aesthetics, and sustainability, we primarily utilise three premium timber options:

Sapele is our hardwood of choice. It is known for its rich red-brown colour, and is an excellent choice for joinery as it has very few knots and a straight grain, making it very stable and durable.

Accoya is a revolutionary timber product that undergoes a non-toxic modification process, enhancing its performance and stability. It offers unparalleled durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to decay, making it an ideal choice for our bespoke joinery. This timber comes with a 50 year warranty against rot and is an excellent choice for high weather elevations, or properties close to the sea. It is also our recommended timber for oversized or French doors due to its stability.

Oak is a classic timber choice known for its timeless beauty, strength, and versatility. It adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any heritage project, ensuring longevity and charm.

Occasionally, we also work with Iroko, another durable hardwood known for its resistance to rot and decay. Each timber option is carefully selected to meet our stringent quality standards and ensure that your bespoke windows and doors are not only visually stunning but also built to last.

Our dedicated installation team will first come to the workshop where they be briefed in on the job by the operations team, utilising the information supplied in the job bag. They will then load up the appropriate joinery and make their way to your property.

Upon arrival, they will introduce themselves and inspect the joinery in question before unloading any items from the van. We ask that you clear the immediate vicinity of the window or door prior to our arrival to ensure we have appropriate access.

If you are able, we ask that you remove any blinds, shutters or curtains from the window or door, again prior to our arrival. If this is not possible, please speak to the operations team during the survey and we can plan accordingly.

If the window or door is a full replacement or restoration (replacement sashes within an existing frame), the installation process would usually be 1 day. If you are having refurbishments, these can take up to 2 days to complete on site, but we will always ensure you are left weather tight and secure at the end of each working day.
