Double Glazed Timber Windows for Commercial Listed Buildings

Listed buildings are protected for good reason. They represent an important part of our architectural and cultural heritage, and features such as original timber windows often play a significant role in defining their character. Because of this, any alterations must meet strict conservation requirements to ensure the historic appearance of the building is preserved.

For property owners, developers, and commercial building managers, this can make upgrading windows feel challenging. Traditional single glazing often leads to draughts, poor insulation, and high energy bills. However, replacing historic windows is not as simple as installing modern alternatives. Any changes must respect the original design, materials, and proportions of the building.

This is where specialist manufacturers play a crucial role.

Meeting the Requirements of Listed Buildings

Work carried out on listed buildings must protect the architectural character that justified the listing in the first place. Windows are often one of the most visually important features of a historic property, so replacement solutions must replicate the original design as closely as possible.

In many cases this means a like for like replacement. The new windows must match the originals in several key areas including:

  • Traditional timber construction
  • Original sash or casement styles
  • Matching glazing bar layouts and proportions
  • Accurate frame profiles and detailing
  • Appropriate finishes and ironmongery

The goal is for the replacement window to appear indistinguishable from the original when viewed from both the exterior and interior.

While the appearance remains traditional, modern manufacturing methods allow significant improvements in performance.

Modern Double Glazing with Traditional Timber Design

Advances in glazing technology now make it possible to install high performance double glazing within traditionally styled timber windows.

Slimline double glazed units are specifically designed to fit within heritage timber frames without altering the visual character of the window. From the outside, the window retains the same proportions and detailing as the historic original.

Inside the sealed unit, two panes of glass are separated by a narrow cavity that contains insulating gas such as argon or the even more energy efficient krypton utilised within our windows. These gases slow the transfer of heat far more effectively than air, dramatically improving the thermal performance of the window.

This approach allows listed buildings to benefit from modern insulation while maintaining their historic appearance. Alternatively, vacuum insulated glass can be implemented for an even thinner, even more thermally efficient option.

Understanding U Values and Energy Performance

When assessing the efficiency of windows, the most important measurement is the U value. This measures how easily heat passes through the window. The lower the number, the better the insulation.

Typical performance levels include:

  • Single glazed timber windows around 5.0 W/m²K
  • Older double glazing around 2.8 W/m²K
  • Modern slimline heritage glazing around 1.2 W/m²K or lower

With advanced glazing systems and carefully engineered timber frames, at Tailored Wood we can provide U values as low as 0.4 W/m²K while still maintaining a traditional appearance suitable for heritage properties.

For commercial listed buildings in particular, this improvement can lead to substantial reductions in heating demand and significantly improved internal comfort. All without compromising any of the original design philosophy.

Specialist Heritage Window Manufacturing

Successfully replacing windows in a listed building requires a detailed understanding of conservation requirements as well as traditional joinery techniques.
