Elevating Comfort and Safety with Casement Windows

Casement Windows Case Study

At Tailored Wood, we take pride in building lasting relationships with our clients, and Mr. and Mrs. R are no exception. Having first collaborated with them in 2018 to replace the box sash windows on the front elevation of their country home, we were honoured to be approached once again, this time for a loft conversion project.

The Project

Situated near Bramdean, Mr. and Mrs. R’s country home is a haven of comfort and elegance. For their loft conversion project, they entrusted us with the design and installation of four casement windows, each carefully crafted to enhance both the aesthetic and functionality of their living space.

Three of the windows were destined for new dormers on the front elevation, while the fourth was to be fitted to the end gable. Drawing from our experience and expertise, we recommended Accoya as the timber choice for their new windows—a premium, long-lasting option known for its durability and backed by a 50-year warranty against rot.

The Challenge

However, one challenge arose during the project: regulatory compliance and the need for the gable window to serve as an emergency escape route in case of fire. To address this requirement without compromising on safety or aesthetics, we devised a solution—a flying mullion design for the gable window.

This innovative approach allows the window to function as both a traditional casement window and an unobstructed means of escape in the event of an emergency. When opened, the flying mullion creates a large exit without obstruction, ensuring the safety of Mr. and Mrs. R and their family.

The successful completion of the loft conversion project not only provided Mr. and Mrs. R with additional space and comfort but also exemplified our commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. By combining premium materials with thoughtful design, we delivered windows that are not only aesthetically pleasing and warm but also practical and safe.

At Tailored Wood, we cherish the opportunity to collaborate with clients like Mr. and Mrs. R, transforming their visions into reality and creating spaces that inspire joy and comfort for years to come. If you have a project in mind that demands the highest standards of craftsmanship and innovation, we invite you to contact us and discover how we can bring your vision to life.

We needed restoration work as well as complete replacements for some sash windows, and I have to say I now can’t tell which is which. Many of the period details had been removed from the building by previous owners but with the help of Joel and his team we managed to restore the soul of my home. From start to finish such care and attention goes into their work it was a joy to work with them.

After meeting with Joel, his personable approach, and excellent advice and ideas, were our reasons for choosing Joel and his team to make and fit our windows. The windows have transformed the front of our house. The craftsmanship is excellent and the attention to detail regarding decorating and finish is second to none. The after-service was excellent.

We’re now getting Joel and his team back to install a skylight. Thank you to Tailored Wood. Highly recommended.

Roof light double glazed unit replacement

We had replacement sash windows made for an Edwardian property and Joel and the team did a great job. The advice they gave initially was spot on and Joel knew the local period style. There was no pushy salesperson. I went and had a look in the workshop and was shown finished windows and the process of making them was explained. The windows were installed on time by a professional team, who were a pleasure to work with. Our builders even commented on the quality of the work. The windows look excellent and we have had a lot of positive feedback. Well worth the money.
